Worked amazingly well for me!
I have already recommended the diet and the book to several people. I personally don't use the recipes in the book. I just eat the things Dr. Brill says to eat daily. I also exercise 30 minutes per day as recommended. I lost 20 lbs in three months (from 206 to 186) and my cholesterol numbers went from too bad to measure to really good.

I was prescribed a statin drug about nine months ago and my bad numbers actually went up. Why? Probably because I didn't modify my diet at all. I actually think I ate more cheese burgers during the period between taking the statin and not. My test three months ago showed triglycerides of 499. This made the validity of the rest of the numbers questionable. Three month before that, I had a test that showed these numbers:

  • Cholesterol 261 (should be < 200)
  • Triglycerides 363 (should be < 150)
  • LDL 153
  • VLDL 61

Today, April 8th, 2010. I received the results of my most recent test and the numbers are good:

  • Cholesterol 137
  • Triglycerides 114
  • HDL 53
  • LDL 65

In addition to eating the food recommended in the book and walking 30 minutes per day, I also took Trilipix (last two months) and four 1200mg capsules of fish oil each day.

If you have high triglycerides, especially if they are too high to measure, you should ask your doctor about taking a fibrate instead of a statin. Trilipix and Gemfibrizol are examples of fibrates. I actually might stop taking Trilipix, just to see what the difference is without it. I am just curious to see how much the drug is actually helping me. Of course, these are my results. The book quotes several scientific studies and provides a bunch of anecdotal stories from other individuals. Ultimately, each person has to do what is right for them, which could be just changing their diet or it might include taking a medication as well. The important thing is to do something about it long before a build-up of plaque in your body becomes your demise. Good luck

No more statins! My numbers:
date...................mar 24-10...........dec 17-09
total cholesterol......166.................214
HDL.......................57..................51
LDL.......................97..................150
ratio........................2.9.................4.2
tryglicerides..............60..................63
I stopped taking statins in october because they were making me sick. I purchased this book Jan 1 2010 and read every word as soon as it arrived. This stuff works. Buy the book. Get your own numbers.

Dr. Brill,
I want to thank you so much for your book, Cholesterol Down – your 10 step plan really works! On January 12, 2010 my total cholesterol was 243 and my LDL was 157. Today (March 5, 2010) my total cholesterol is 163 and my LDL is 101, accomplished without any medication. I have been following your 10 steps and I expected some improvement, but I was shocked by the amount of improvement in such a short time – especially since your program is so easy to follow. Thanks again

Right on the Money!
There can be no better alternative to lowering Cholesterol than the natural methods outline in this book. I implemented about 7-8 of the steps and incorporate some of my own remedies... After 4 weeks my total Cholesterol went from 199 to 187, LDL went down from 127 to 102 and the most impressive is HDL increase from 44 to 71. I am happy. Thank you Dr. Janet Brill!

Book is a Treasure Trove!
Author has done a great job in simplifying good heart-health information into a 10-step daily checklist. Used it for 3 months and lowered my cholesterol by 50 points! I am thrilled! No medications (which the MD was constantly pushing all the while telling me I was expecting too much from dietary interventions).

This book saves anyone seriously needing to lower their LDL cholesterol a lot of money. I used the LDL chol progress chart in the book and made the recipes Spinach Salad, Chix w/ 40 cloves of garlic, and Oat-Apple-Flax Pancakes. My husband enjoyed the Pepperless Bean Salad (he, too doesn't eat bell peppers). Then, we used the Cooking ala Heart recipes for the rest of the week.

You won't regret buying this book. I give it a hearty full thumbs up. Thanks Janet for working so hard to put all this great knowledge into one book. I know first hand the amount of work that goes into writing and producing a book! Nice job.

Wonderful Results!
I just wanted to say thank you for writing such a great book with an easy to follow plan. Two months ago my doctor told me to go on a low-fat diet because my cholesterol was 218 up from a year prior when it was 206. During that year I'd lost 20 pounds and already ate a low fat diet and exercise regularly. I am 40 years old and really did not want to end up on a statin. High cholesterol runs in my family so I knew that was where I was headed.  I found your book and set up a spreadsheet and have had amazing results. In 8 weeks my total cholesterol went down 25% to 163 and my LDL cholesterol level was reduced 35% from 142 to 93. I am so happy about the results. Thanks again!
Happy New Year!

Thanks, Dr. Brill.
I followed between 5 and 7 of the ten steps outlined on this book with consistency and was able to lower my cholesterol from 255 to 173 in 3 1/2 weeks. I do not know if it will work for everybody, but it did for me. All I can say is thank you, Dr. Brill.

Cholesterol Down: If you can't tolerate drugs, you now have an option!
No one ever tells you why to eat certain foods. This book prescribes how much and what to eat, tells you how it helps, cites case studies and their results showing you percentages of benefit derived from eating particular foods. Doctors are into saying drugs are the only way, while not even mentioning the substantial benefits that can achieved by a simple change in diet. The doctors and hospital told me no salt and no cholesterol after my stent. After my stent I was prescribed drugs that gave me muscle pain, prevented me from doing any kind of exertion, and basically left me bereft of anything to eat. I hungrily wandered the grocery stores and found nothing that didn't contain salt or cholesterol. After reading the book I've achieved the same results that my doctor achieved, but without the drugs and their consequent side affects. I'm now full of good foods, off the statin drugs, and following the diet prescribed in the book with the added addition of taking Niacin.

Healthy Food isn't Boring!
"I first borrowed this book from the library when my husband was diagnosed with high cholesterol. We don't like to take medicine, are healthy eaters, and knew we could make a few adjustments. Wow, is this plan great! My husband has lost 20 lbs in 2 months—of course, the proof will be in the next blood test.

Honestly, if you're a junk food junkie, this isn't the plan for you. It takes work. You'll have to plan your meals and actually COOK. But if you're willing to adjust your lifestyle, definitely give it a try. She has a number of good recipes, so you don't have to eat your vegetables and whole grains plain."

Sensible approach whatever your condition!
"This is an outstanding book, not least because it promotes a sensible approach that can be applied to all "diets"/lifestyle changes. All ideas are extremely easy to implement and will lead to lower cholesterol as well as weight loss if followed sensibly. I speak from experience, my LDL went from 207 to 118 in 3 months. I continue with this lifestyle and have lost 12 pounds, I feel lean and healthy and far more energetic. Best of all, there are some excellent recipes in the book, which are almost worth buying the book for alone! In a confusing and often murky area of health help, Cholesterol Down provides an easy-to-repeat formula to help with cholesterol control and overall health - everyone should be eating more fibre of both kinds!"

I am so happy, got it down from 234 to 175 in 4 weeks!!!
It really is a miracle. I was so nervous and worried. I didn't do all 10 steps. I just did the breakfast oatmeal thing and worked in extra bran, flaxseed, margarine and soy milk, and wha-la! I'm looking at a healthy ratio. I can't wait to see what happens 5 months from now. REALLY GREAT BOOK, good information, good ideas, good success stories, good all over! AND it works!!!

Helpful Information
When my husband was diagnosed with high cholesterol, I wanted to help him tackle the problem. This book gives 10 pretty doable recommendations for how to lower cholesterol. They are the same suggestions that our dietician gave him. Although, she also suggested fish oil supplements in addition. The best part of the book is the detailed explanation as to why all these suggestions work. The science behind why almonds, apples and oatmeal help pull cholesterol from your bloodstream really helped my husband buy into making the changes. Good luck.

Read and Practice- or you could spend $1700/yr to treat your abnormal cholesterol!
"Two years ago, my cholesterol counts were outside of healthful limits (LDL 216, HDL 36, Triglycerides 279). Today, as a result of applying the 10 steps in this book, I have attained a comfortable margin of health in this regard- WITHOUT MEDICATION (recent counts: 158, 45, 116, respectively). I've also lost 40 pounds and escaped mild hypertension as pleasant, unexpected side effects.

My doctor warned me several times about high cholesterol. The gravity of this danger did not sink in until I read the first chapter, "Cholesterol 101." The danger of high cholesterol cannot be overstated. That chapter was a doozie!

Before reading this book, I found that I simply didn't have enough information to put that advice into practice. My doctor kept telling me that a diet low in fat, high in fiber and exercise are the three keys to a healthful cholesterol count. Questions like, "Which foods contain fiber? Why is fiber important? How much?" are answered in this book.

During a recent physical exam, my doctor commented, "...your numbers are spectacular! If you could put whatever you did into a little bottle and sell it, you'd be a millionaire..."

Note: treating abnormal cholesterol with medication costs about $1700/year. That represents a lot of oatmeal, walking shoes, and opportunities to give this book as a gift to family and friends... "

It really works!
"In August of this year, I started a strict diet and followed 8 out of the 10 recommendations mentioned in this book. This month (october) I had my cholesterol level checked. I was delighted to see that my total cholesterol dropped by 50 points! In addition, my triglycerides went down to an acceptable level as well. I plan to continue following the recommendations in this book and add the two that I had not been able to do (adding soy to my diet and plant sterols) in order to bring my LDL (bad cholesterol) down a little bit more. My doctor didn't think I could bring down my cholesterol this much without a drug, but I was determined to prove him wrong. I am so thankful to this author and her wonderful, easy to follow steps. It has saved my life."

Amazing Results from Cholesterol Down Plan
"All I can tell you is that this Cholesterol Down eating and exercise plan works! When I decided to get this book, I had already tried to take two different prescription cholesterol medications, but I could not tolerate the side effects. Well, the side effects with this plan turned out to be my total cholesterol going from 234 to 166, triglycerides going from 133 to 89, LDL (bad cholesterol) going from 167 to 69, and HDL (good cholesterol) went from 56 to 80. At the same time, totally unexpected, my diabetes A1c test was PERFECT (5.8) for the first time since I was diagnosed 4 years ago.

The book is well written and easy to understand. She explains what cholesterol is in a way that a lay person can understand. She also explains the science behind choosing the foods she includes in the plan.

The second half of the book includes a daily planner for working these foods into your diet, numerous suggested menus and recipes. I really didn't use her recipes much, although they looked good. I worked the foods into my diet using menus I was already comfortable with. I was already exercising 30 minutes a day and eating a healthy diet, but did not know which foods were best for lowering cholesterol before I read the book.

If you're serious about getting that cholesterol down, this is the book for you."

Amazing Results
"On 11/30/2007 my total cholesterol was 220, LDL 166, HDL 43, and triglycerides 53. My Doctor recommended that I start Lipitor. Before staring Lipitor I researched the drug and side effects and decided that there must be a better way. Today 2/5/2008 after using the "Cholesterol Down" recomendations since 12/15/2007 my cholesterol total is 134, LDL 91, HDL, 31, triglycerides 58. This is an amazing turn around. I did not use the Metamucil as recommended because I was prescribed a blood pressure med at the same time. The concern was that the Metamucil would bind to the blood pressure medication and limit its benefit. I am thrilled and have thanked Janet Brill for showing me the way without drugs. Let me tell you however that you must be dedicated to the diet. It worked for me."

A simple plan that really works—a must for anyone struggling with high cholesterol

The 10 steps outlined by Janet Brill really works. As a result of following the plan, I lowered my cholesterol 40 points in 3 months, without prescription drugs. Having cholesterol problems on both sides of my family, I followed the plan, but had no idea that my results would be so dramatic. I was a skeptic, who hoped for the best. My doctor was so surprised by my numbers that I have referred the book to him. He took a few extra minutes during my visit to find out how I was able to make such a dramatic improvement.

The recipes that are provided in the book are very tasty and enjoyable, making it easy to follow the 10 steps. Quite frankly, I am enjoying feeling and looking better, and I look forward to introducing healthier eating options to my family and friends. I have already purchased additional copies to share with friends who have been struggling to improve their cholesterol.

A must read for those who are looking for simple, concrete steps to take towards lowering their cholesterol. Dr. Brill does a great job of outlining specific foods that can be added to the diet to help lower cholesterol as well as give detailed reasons as to WHY and HOW these foods help the way they do. The book is not overly scientific, nor overly simplistic. As a dietitian, I highly recommend this book to friends, family and patients with high cholesterol who want to try adding delicious foods (in place of less nutritious choices) to their diet before trying cholesterol lowering drugs. This plan is simple, easy to follow and effective - what could be better?

By Dayna Boyer

"Diet, fitness, and wellness expert Brill has authored a useful and clearly written book to help people make lifestyle changes that she purports can lower "bad" (LDL) cholesterol as effectively as statins. Brill explains what cholesterol is, what it does in the body, and why lowering LDL cholesterol is important. She also elucidates how each lifestyle change she prescribes acts on the body to lower LDL cholesterol. Brill starts with basic concepts and builds on them, using lay terms. In this way, the dry, scientific explanations flow well and are easy to understand. She provides many options for each of the lifestyle changes and proposes a two-week food plan (with recipes) to help the reader implement her strategy.
